This story of women who create a private language as part of their resistance to a male-dominated society reads well, has good characters (mostly) and kept my attention to the end. But I got a little impatient with the hopelessly chauvinistic men, who seemed to be incredibly blind to the intelligence and abilities of the women all around them.

Some of the descriptions of technology, despite the fact that the story takes place in the 22nd century, are almost delightfully antique, and reading this in 2013 reminds me of the dangers of trying to predict the future of technology. It's still worth reading, if only for the strikingly original premise.

Native Tongue Suzette Haden Elgin 9781876756055 Books Reviews

This novel is incredible; it will particularly interest any who have studied the Sapir-Whorf theory, as the novel focuses on linguists in a futuristic era. It is a wonderful, albeit dystopian, prediction of what a future in the United States would be like if women's rights were taken away. I am looking forward to read the next two novels of the trilogy.

Regarding the book quality, though the book is sturdy, I found the paper to be too white for extensive reading. I felt that the pages were hard on my eyes and I frequently had to stop as I would get dizzy front the combination of white pages and very dark, almost bold ink used for the font. I hope the next time this book is published that the publisher sees the importance of good quality paper for the reader.
I'm very happy with the delivered book. It's in fine condition; better than I'd expected in fact.

But the title posted is misleading. I was under the impression that this edition would be all 3 books under one cover.

Admittedly, I jumped to that conclusion, and accept my share of the blame.

I'll keep what I've got.

Thanks
This is one of my all time favorite books. I used to own 5 hard back copies, but I have now given most of them away.
This seems a little dated, unlike The Handmaid's Tale (which just seems to get more relevant) but I really enjoyed it regardless. A well-told story and a pretty concise summary of that generation of feminist thought. Probably would go over well in the classroom.
I found the initial premise of the book to be somewhat disturbing. I found the solution to the problem to be interesting. I am looking forward to the sequel.
I truly can’t believe I had never heard of this book prior to it showing up on my goodreads recommendations. Fascinating deep dive into language, the purpose of language and what a shared language bring. And that’s even without getting into the fascinating dystopian gender dynamics portrayed in the move (though these “dystopian” dynamics are not far removed from what women (and POC) experiences at the hands of white men for centuries.

This book will linger on my mind for a long long time. Beautifully constructed. Deserving of all praise.
Seriously gripping, amazingly inventive, torturingly upsetting, and so much that is true and must be considered in our every day lives, folded into a fantastic science fiction novel.

I mistakenly thought as I was reading, that this was modeled after Atwood's brilliant "The Handmaid's Tale." No, that was published after "Native Tongue." But if you are familiar with Atwood's work, this awesome novel by Elgin can roughly and inadequately be described as something reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale but with more depth, a few aliens, and lots of linguists.

The themes of human nature, human cruelty, human blindness to motivations, and the dangers and joys of language and words choice are astounding. The feminist themes buried in a book in which the female characters have few legal rights are both subtle and obvious. The book has three interwoven plot lines, any one of which could be an interesting read, but together they are so much more.

I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

Is it a coincidence that the day I am reviewing this book, the Russian parliament voted to decriminalize domestic violence? This book is not about domestic violence, so don't be alarmed, but women's rights are forever under siege, clearly, so this fiction future is not an impossibility, for sure.
