I'm very into true crime, and I've done a little amateur sleuthing myself, so I'm no stranger to the disturbing details that accompany these stories.

But the story about Joran van der Sloot was particularly disturbing. At some points I even felt sick and nauseous from the shocking details put in this book.

That being said, it's one of the better true crime books I've read. Not just because of the very stylized, descriptive writing, but because the exhaustive research that went into it, and the very clear image of Joran that's painted.

What's very evident from the book and other articles, is the way Joran sees himself as a victim of bad luck.

Personally, I think Joran drugged Natalee that night and she died on the beach from a bad reaction to the drug. There were many stories that came out after Natalee's disappearance, of his gang of friends, drugging and raping teens. So, from his perspective, I'm sure it did seem like bad luck.

The bigger story here is how this way of preying on and attacking girls was normalized. Joran saw it as being "cool". If not for Natalee's death, their "pimp crew" would have gone on behaving in this way indefinitely.

Joran believes his descent began when Natalee died, but I think it began long before that.

There is some good insight in this book.
Well researched and written. The comparisons & contrasts between the Natalee Holloway & Stefany Flores cases, as well as the legal systems of Aruba & Peru, makes this unfortunate true story particularly fascinating. Joran van Der Sloot has no redeeming qualities of any kind. This reader is glad to know he won't be out of prison any time soon so that no other trusting young woman will fall prey of his superficial charms. It's tragic that it happened once much less twice. If Aruba used a plea bargaining system like that of the USA, more likely than not, Stefany Flores would be live today.
Lot of back ground info and details.....some of it slow reading..all local police departments came across as more competent than portrayed on tv..
I was very surprised at how much was going on behind the scenes that the media wasn't privy to or at least didn't report. I found the background information to be very thorough and helped give us a sense of what all three families were going through. My heart breaks for them and their lost loved ones. This book lets us appreciate the beauty of both women beyond the pictures released to the media. I was riveted by the in-depth information on this clearly sick individual and all of his depictions of the "truth" and especially his ability to float from one opportunity to the next. Essentially living his life as a means to an end at all times.
I ordered this with the last order from and I thought for $3.25 for a hardcover its a steal. and I am very glad I did get it.....

The book tells the story of Joran Van der Sloot and his involvement with Natalie Holloway in the Caribbean Aruba and Stephany Florez in Peru. and the events in-between and the irrevocable damage done to all parties involved, not just the young lady's families but his own..

its a must read for anyone who has knowledge on the cases and wants to know more. Its very well researched and well written I am happy I ordered it
I nearly only gave this book 4 stars as I knew the monster had pled guilty and was disappointed that the guilty outcome was not in the book. I guess with this particular murderer there is perhaps no end to his story. My memory of Natalee Holloway missing all those years ago captured the Australian news through Fox on pay tv. The anguish of her mother was felt worldwide. Imagine my horror when I found out that van der Sloot had been captured and pled guilty to the murder of yet another innocent young girl 5 years to the day Natalee had gone missing. Thanks so much to the parents of these two young ladies for their contribution to this story. Your pain has touched me and I pray that some resolution will come about regarding Natalee. This book was so well written, starting with the disappearence of Natalee and then woven around Stephany's murder, with the two crimes meeting somewhere in the middle. This book held my attention from beginning to end. I am not sure that there will ever be a truthful outcome to Natalee's case, and that is why I say this story has no ending.
I'd been following the Joran Van der Sloot story since the disappearance of Natalee Halloway. The book covers both her story and that of Stephany Flores, whom Van der Sloot confessed to killing five years to the day of Natalee's disappearance. It's a thorough tale, taking the reader back and forth between Aruba and Peru, covering the circumstances of each woman's interaction with Van der Sloot. I recommend this book to anyone who's been following these stories in the news as the book gives the reader what feels like an insider's perspective to the crimes. A must read!
